pretty, 多用于口语；  fairly, 多修饰好的一面的形容词；  rather, 可修饰不好的或好的一面的形容词；  quite, 多修饰好的一面的形容词和无等级之分的形容词。

fairly, 和  rather, 同是修饰一个词，意思上有区别。

rather, 和  quite, 可放在动词之前。

我倒很喜欢这颜色。I rather like this colour,

她确实喜欢他。She quite like him,

rather 和 quite 都可和名词连用，若无形容词都必须放在冠词前。

她有个蛮好的嗓子。She's got rather a good voice ,
